Having a specialist background in landscape photography is a huge advantage when it comes to wedding photography. Landscape photography is about using light and strong compositions and these two elements along with story telling are a vital part of wedding photography in particular reportage coverage.
I see many wedding photographs that have poor lighting as well as composition and are arguably little more than snaps. Using a zoom lens and/or tilting ones camera is not reportage photography. Excellent reportage photographs are often taken up close and personal with a wide angle lens.
A wide angle lens adds context with the venue as a backdrop or other guests that help frame the image. Some of my favourite reportage images from Lisa and Ian's wedding are shown below. All six were taken with a wide angle lens and have elements of good light, composition and storytelling.
